Cliff Serwa has been a supporter of the Okanagan Mission Rotary Club for many years. Along with his wife, Lois, who is a long-time Rotarian and is a Director of the club, Cliff has been involved in many of the club's activities and fund-raisers.cliff_pin_1

Cliff was co-founder of the Big White Ski Resort in Kelowna. He was one of seven Social Credit MLAs elected in the 1991 election representing Okanagan South from 1986 to 1991 and Okanagan West from 1991 to 1996 in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as a Social Credit member. He served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Environment.

OKM Rotary is proud to have Cliff as an honourary Rotarian.

The Annual OKM Grade 8 Rotary Essay is open to all Kelowna schools in School District 23 and is hotly contested. It has been run so far for seven years.

The topics for 2015 chosen by the students were wide ranging and varied from local to international projects. Student speakers discussed the use of modified shipping containers as moveable medical clinics, the need for schools to meet the diversity of their students, dealing with student obesity and the requirement in our schools and parks for more resources to deal with mental health problems.Maraya & teachers

Sarah Watson and Keely Flannigan - Members of the Instructional Leadership Team for School District 23 - have been responsible for communicating with grade 8 teachers and organizing the Essay contest for the last three years.
They receive all the essays and assess them for the contest.

Maraya Ito-Dyck received an Honourable Mention award and a cash prize for her essay dealing with the Expression Swing and the benefits to mental well being of children engaging in external recreational activities with parents, grandparents or older siblings

Maraya was encouraged to enter the contest by her Teacher Tanya Groetchen and School Principal, Kathy Weninger and , was supported by them and her family in the enterprise

Her essay and her project idea has blossomed because Kelowna Parks have agreed to install an Expression Swing in the Rutland Centennial Park, this summer as part of the 2015-16 improvement programme.
We all hope will be the first of many Expression Swings installed in parks across the City.

This contest would not run without the support and skills of the teachers of School District 23, the skills, interest and enthusiasm of students like Maraya. The students themselves wouldn't be able to take part without the support of their parents and other family members.

This is a prime example of how Rotary's involvement in the community and the local schools leads all the way to civic improvements.
